Mercury exists in natural and process gases in elemental and metal salts forms. It is removed from the gases by reacting the mercury with a special impregnation on an activated carbon carrier. The mercury adsorbs to the reactant upon contact as the gas permeates the bed. Elemental mercury degrades, by amalgamation, system piping and equipment. This is especially true of any equipment containing aluminum. Mercury salts are only slightly soluble in water, and deposit in process equipment and enhance corrosion. Residual contamination of fuel, flare, and process off gases has to be closely controlled because of the human health effects.
